At Sure Link Electric we care about electrical safety and want you know be aware of the steps we need to take to ensure all electrical work carried out is to code and safe for you and your family or business.

What is the E.S.A.?

E.S.A., or the Electrical Safety Authority, is the governing body over the electrical industry in Ontario. In order to be a licensed contractor, all electricians must be licensed with the E.S.A.

Why does Sure Link Electric Inc. obtain a permit for their work?

As an electrical contractor licensed with the E.S.A., Mr. Electric abides by the Codes and Standards set forth by the E.S.A.

Electrical installation, repair and replacement work needs to be done in compliance with the Ontario Electrical Safety Code. The Code specifies how electrical work must be done. The Code is updated every three years to address emerging technology and improvements in safety practices.

When is a permit required?

Any work that requires any kind of wiring (new circuits, extending existing circuits, etc.) any service upgrades/repairs/replacements, etc. requires a permit to be obtained.

When an electrical home inspection is completed by Sure Link Electric and finds the electrical in the home not to code, and a repair is required, a permit is obtained for the repair.

If a customer has had E.S.A. already visit their home for a General Inspection and have had a Notice of Deficiency issued to them for code violations, a permit is required for the repair work to offset the defect notice.

Who does the inspection of the work completed?

ESA’s expect inspectors will review the electrical work, sometimes at multiple stages if it’s complicated.

Once the inspection is completed, a final ESA Certificate of Inspection is issued and forwarded to the customer (usually the next business day).

Can anyone do electrical work?

No, general handymen and other service providers cannot do electrical work in residences. Only an electrician licensed with the E.S.A. may do electrical work in your home legally.

Do I have to get the permit myself?

No. Sure Link Electric will work on your behalf to obtain the permit and arrange for any inspection(s) required.

If you have any other questions on concerns please don't hesitate to ask!
